Should You Choose A College Where Your Test Scores and GPA Are Below Average?

A blog reader recently asked the question, "Is it dumb to go to a school where you barely get in?"

My response:

First of all, how would you know whether you barely got in? Your test scores/GPA as compared to the average of students accepted to that school? Those don't mean everything. Extracurriculars and soft factors matter, too.

If you have the freedom to choose a decent number of classes in your chosen school, you can always pick subjects where you'll excel. Performance in high school doesn't necessarily dictate performance in college.
